DIY Skin Remedies

Most women don't like to disclose their skin issues... but I will for you all.  In my younger years my skin was very oily and I would constantly get horrible break outs. I'm not talking small red bumps break outs. I'm talking those cystic acne break outs that end up swelling and distorting the shape of your face. You can't cover that up with make-up.  Since I didn't have much money to spend on skin care products, I ended up figuring out how to make my own skin care remedies. Here are a few that worked out really well.

These remedies should NOT be used daily. Overuse will irritate skin.

Skin Brightening and Exfoliating Scrub
I used this often and it definitely helped get rid of black heads and keep my skin smooth and bright

Take a grapefruit and slice in half.  Use one half, save the other half for another time.

Take a fork and poke grapefruit a few times to get juices to surface

Sprinkle regular granulated white sugar on grapefruit. If you would like a gentle exfoliate use only a little sugar.  If you would like a more intense exfoliate, add more sugar until you reach the desired texture.

Take grapefruit and rub all over face (or area you would like exfoliated.) It should feel like a scrub.

Rinse and cleanse with your normal face cleanser.

Oily Acne Fix

This remedy should only be used with severely oily blemishes that are not drying out (best on cystic acne breakouts)

Take a 5-10 aspirin tablets (uncoated work best) and place in a ziplock plastic baggie

Crush tablets until they are of fine consistency

Add water, a little at a time, until the consistency is that of a paste.

Dab paste on blemishes that need treatment

Leave on for 10 minutes, rinse, then cleanse with your normal cleanser

Moisturizing Banana Face Mask

This mask works well for dry, rough skin.

Take 1 ripe banana and mash into a creamy consistency in a bowl

Mix in 1 tablespoon of honey

Mix in 1 tablespoon of oats

Apply to face and leave on for 15 minutes

Remove with a soft damp warm wash cloth

Rinse face and cleanse with normal cleanser

For Sun Damaged Skin / Age Spots

This mask both calms and moisturizes sunburned skin.  I've heard it also helps with age spots

Take 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt and mix with 1 tablespoon of honey

Apply to face and leave on for 25 minutes

Remove with warm, damp washcloth

Rinse face and cleanse with normal cleanser
