Parenthood Pearls: Easy Ways to Teach Your Kids Healthy Habits

Written by a contributing writer

We all want our children to grow up to become smart, funny, and interesting people. But it’s not always easy to control this. Your little one might grow up to adopt a quirky and dark humor, fail to fascinate their dates with stories of adventure, and spend most of their teenage years watching reality shows rather than political debates; some things are just out of your hands as a parent. There’s one thing we can control, though, which will provide them with a long and healthy life - no matter how quirky or strange they might become otherwise.

Sure, your kids will pick up your habits and maybe your sense of humor too, so you’ll know where it’s all heading - kind of, at least.

Make Veggies Fun

There are fun ways to get veggies into your kids' diets. Of course, there's sometimes resistance when it comes to vegetables. Afterall, who doesn't like the taste of potatoes over broccoli?  But cheese can be put over broccoli to liven it up. Some frozen veggie brands even make cauliflower and broccoli "tater tots." Zucchini bakes into muffins splendidly. If you're not one to bake or cook from scratch, don't worry! Frozen versions of these veggie muffins (that taste like chocolate) also exist.

Another thing parents struggle with is making their kids drink water. A tip for this issue is to slowly, but surely, dilute your chid's juice until there is only a splash of juice in a cup full of water. This makes the switch to just water much easier.

Oral Hygiene Can Be Fun Too

Brushing our teeth is something we do every day, which already sets a good example for your child. Seeing mommy and daddy brushing their teeth in the morning will make them step into the bathroom immediately and want to be where it’s happening. You want them to brush for the sake of their teeth, though, and not just to be social, as it will save you money when you go to the dentist in the future. Here are some useful tips on how to make brushing teeth fun for your kids.

If you struggle with making your little one open their mouth when it’s time to brush, turn it around; open your mouth instead and give up control for a bit. Your teeth won’t be too clean, of course, but that’s not what it’s about - be a good actor, make it a fun time, and each day will be a bit easier for both of you.  You can also try different types of toothbrushes to see if there is one your child prefers.

In all fairness, there’s an endless list to how you can teach your children healthy habits that will last them a lifetime. A short article like this won’t be able to cover them all, but the principle stays the same; everything you communicate as a chore will be avoided, and kids gravitate to fun, laughter, and goofiness. Not only will bringing fun into otherwise mundane tasks help your child learn healthy habits, it may also make your day just a bit brighter as well!
